Let’s touch a bit on tooth whitening at home this morning! I get a lot of emails asking for a tooth whitening home remedy and we have one that’s works fantastically!
Oil Pulling or Oil Swishing is a great home remedy for dental health in general and we have gotten great results with oil pulling for tooth whitening at home!
Today we’re going to tell you how!
Tooth Whitening at Home with Oil Pulling
I first learned of oil pulling several years ago and I was shocked I hadn’t heard of it sooner. It sounded like the ultimate ‘goofy’ remedy that wouldn’t work to me. But after researching quite a bit … like I do on everything … I decided I just had to try it.
I stood at the bathroom sink for a good 10 minutes that first time … trying to get up the nerve to put that tsp of oil in my mouth because I couldn’t imagine doing that and not getting sick. But I finally did it and was so surprised that it wasn’t that bad.
Garden of Life Organic Unrefined Extra Virgin Coconut Oil – Healthy Vegan Cooking Oil, 32oz Liquid
After about 3 days I could really see a difference in my teeth and I was thrilled.
Most directions will tell you to take about 1 TBSP of oil but I only use 1 TSP of a good oil and that’s plenty, really.
What Kind of Oil Should You Use for Oil Swishing?
In the beginning I started by experimenting with different oils. I used Safflower, Sunflower and Sesame Oil – and you put it in your mouth and just start swishing it back and forth through your teeth. I was amazed at the improvement.
I had been using Coconut oil for a lot of other things so I soon changed to Garden of Life Coconut Oil for the oil swishing too and I have never looked back.
As you swish, the oil will start to thin, DO NOT SWALLOW IT!!!
The oil will pull toxins out of your system and when you spit out the oil you will be getting rid of some of the toxins in your body.
Swishing will also whiten teeth … and it will loosen plaque and you will feel little chunks of plaque in your mouth after about the 3rd or 4th day IF YOU HAVE plaque …
When I swished for the first time … on the 3rd day … a big piece of plaque came out while I was swishing and it was so big I thought I had lost part of a tooth. I put it in a kleenex and headed for the woodshop to Geezer and he looked in my mouth and he said, “Well I’ll BE – THAT’s a big piece of plaque from behind your front tooth and I can even see the hole it fits”
I got out several pieces of plaque by oil swishing during that time. I’ll swish for a while and then think my teeth look fine and I’ll quit for weeks … THEN decide to do it again and YUP, sure enough … on about day 3 I’m getting more little pieces of plaque. OIL SWISHING IS AMAZING! And using Garden of Life Coconut Oil makes it even better. SUCH a light and mild taste.
Peroxide and Baking Soda will also Whiten Teeth!
You can also work on tooth whitening at home by brushing twice a day with baking soda and peroxide. You will see a difference in just a few days with the baking soda and peroxide. The thing is being consistent!
It’s really very simple to white teeth at home for most folks. And for a double whammy you could do the oil swishing AND use the baking soda and peroxide at another time during that same day.
Peace and Love from the canyon … Now, go out and make this one of the best days you’ve ever had!!

Ya know, I keep reading about oil pulling, but I’ve been too chicken to try it! But your plaque story may just be enough to get me to FINALLY try this. Holy moly!

Lindsey … Just start with a little oil … it starts out thick but quickly turns thin and it’s really not bad at all … I usually tidy the bathroom really quick while I’m swishing … lol

I like trying to whiten my teeth. Do you think I could learn to drink coffee, hot coffee, through a straw. I love my coffee. It is my worse stainer!

Kim … I drink coffee and coca cola’s and even tea … but if you’re oil swishing daily … your teeth will whiten anyway…

Hi,
this sounds amazing … all I have on hand is olive oil, do you think that would be ok ?
Thanks
Kay Comer says
Absolutely .. Olive oil is one of the oils recommended. I just like the flavor of a couple of these better. But after you swish for just a minute it starts to thin and you don’t taste anything at all. It’s amazing the results I see … and I take pretty good care of my husband and myself. But when I swish and get bits of plaque out … I have a hard time believing it myself and me seeing first hand….I LOVE oil swishing … lol

I am going to try both of these techniques to hopefully offset the stains caused by my addiction to dark beverages. {Pinned}

This is a great post! I’ve heard of oil pulling before but I’m always so nervous to try it because I think it’ll make me gag. I do have a question though, do you brush your teeth before or after oil pulling?

Yes Katy “I” brush after I swish with oil. I rinse and rinse and then rinse with Listerine and then brush … lol I told in one blog about oil pulling that the first time I tried it … I stood at the bathroom sink for 10 minutes trying to get up the nerve to put it in my mouth. But it was SO easy when I finally did it. I’ve tried and tried to get our grown kids to try it and our daughter (age 40) finally did the other day and she’s sold on it. Can already tell a difference in her teeth … it’s amazing and the benefits are out of this world. It thins fast as you swish and in just a minute … you don’t taste any sign of oil … it gets frothy and there’s no taste at all after a minute…..

This really works Melissa … I do it all the time. Just use a good oil and I prefer coconut oil and it thins down fast and is easy to swish. I only swish about 5 minutes and get results…..thanks for reading
