GREAT OLD GOSPEL SONGS BY SOME OLD GOSPEL GREATS
Till The Storm Passes By
By Vestal Goodman and The Gaither Homecoming Group
For an old girl of 67 years old and at 5 foot tall and 120 pounds I guess you could say I’m a pretty spunky little stinker. I’ve made citizens arrests, investigated crimes I felt our law enforcement was failing on, spoke up to people in public if I thought they were being abusive to their kids or mates and even run to the assistance of neighbors when they’d have a prowler and mine and their geezer wasn’t home…because they were terrified and I was closer than law enforcement. But there are 3 things that I am horrifically terrified of…and they are “tornados, streak lightning and snakes”
According to every weather report we’ve heard the last few days…a gazillion million of us are in the path of these horrific
storms that are going to move through today and tomorrow. AND today is church day. I had a dentist appointment tomorrow afternoon and I have literally moved that appointment to later in the week.
I’ve said before that it’s a rare thing for me to miss church. Last year was an exception with my broken leg. But normally I miss 2 Sundays and 1 Wednesday night a year…now that’s a pretty good record.
Weird as it seems…through the years…it’s been a very rare thing that severe electrical storms would be bad enough on a Sunday or Wednesday night to make me stay home…but it ‘has’ happened on rare occasions. But today and tonight…I’ve just got to be there because we are in the process of calling a new pastor and every vote is going to count and mine is going to be there.
But in spite of the excitement of calling a pastor today…I also have these horrific storms hanging over my head and I am worried sick…shall we pray!
I woke up this morning with this song in my mind…Keep Me Safe…Til The Storm Passes By!
“I” believe we can pray storms around us if we pray and ask, believing and I believe I’ve done that many times…Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!
So I just thought I’d share this song with you today…Let’s all just listen to this and get it in our noggins and then we’ll just keep humming it over and over in our minds today…And if we’ll DO that…”I” believe we can pray these horrific storms into minor ones….what do you say….?
Howard Goodman told a story once about a horrific storm they were in…during their early days of singing as a family. And he said Vestal was afraid of storms too.
He said they were at a little country church and tornado warnings were given and they didn’t know whether to go on with their singing or not. But a few people had shown up so they decided to go ahead.
He said Vestal had always had a high soprano voice…but when she got up to sing her solo
part that night….this beautiful deep voice just appeared out of no where and she’s had it ever since….
So listen, Lord…Jake prayed his beautiful voice up while riding a tractor and plowing his fields…but I don’t have a tractor like Jake Hess…and I don’t have a high soprano voice either…but I do have a rough voice and a few storms coming through the next couple days…so if you would just keep us all safe and sound till these storm pass us by…keep the storms very minimal…and when they’re over…if I could possibly have a voice like Vestal Goodman…Please and Thanks
TILL THE STORM PASSES BY
(Mosie Lister) Recorded by: Bill Gaither; Vestal Goodman;
In the dark of the midnight have I oft hid my face,
While the storm howls above me, and there’s no hiding place.
‘Mid the crash of the thunder, Precious Lord, hear my cry,
Keep me safe till the storm passes by.
Chorus Till the storm passes over, till the thunder sounds no more,
Till the clouds roll forever from the sky;
Hold me fast, let me stand in the hollow of Thy hand,
Keep me safe till the storm passes by.
Many times Satan whispered, “There is no need to try,
For there’s no end of sorrow, there’s no hope by and by”
But I know Thou art with me, and tomorrow I’ll rise
Where the storms never darken the skies.
Chorus Till the storm passes over, till the thunder sounds no more,
Till the clouds roll forever from the sky;
Hold me fast, let me stand in the hollow of Thy hand,
Keep me safe till the storm passes by.
When the long night has ended and the storms come no more,
Let me stand in Thy presence on the bright peaceful shore;
In that land where the tempest, never comes, Lord, may I
Dwell with Thee when the storm passes by.
Chorus Till the storm passes over, till the thunder sounds no more,
Till the clouds roll forever from the sky;
Hold me fast, let me stand in the hollow of Thy hand,
Keep me safe till the storm passes by.
