Have you ever heard of the storybook cottages of Carmel, California? Have you ever heard of Hugh Comstock? They say that everything happens for a reason and that sure seems to be so in the story of Hugh and Mayotta.
Hugh went to Carmel, California to visit his sister and her husband and while there he met Mayotta. Now Mayotta marched to the beat of her own drum and was a doll maker and she lived in her own little fantasy land world – kind of like me!
Well – Hugh fell for the sweet innocent charm of Mayotta and they were married in less than a year.
Mayotta’s Dream of Storybook Cottages
Mayotta’s doll making business was just growing in leaps and bounds and she needed a place for a shop. So she asked Hugh if he’d build her a little shop and she wanted it to look like the little cottage in the Hansel and Gretel story.
Hugh wasn’t a carpenter by any sense of the word – but he WAS a newly wed to a sweet little thing that he loved dearly. SO like most husbands when they’re still in that romantic stage of their lives and the new little wife asks for the moon, the newly wed husband said “Oh YES!!! And please…Let me give you the stars too“
Storybook Cottages of Carmel Began as an Accident
Hugh was all for – trying to build Mayotta a little cottage. However, Hugh didn’t even know to use a level. He built the cottage using a lot of natural things – old rough lumber that he just found or had given to him and pine needles to mix with mud for the roof’s. And Mayotta’s little cottage cost just under $100.
Everybody Wanted a Storybook Cottage Built by Hugh Comstock
The people of Carmel were so taken aback at the beauty of the little cottage – everybody started wanting Hugh to build them one. So within 4 years – Hugh had built 27 little storybook cottages in Carmel, California. All without a level and all had swaying chimney’s and doors and archways and hand carved window frames and shutters. You can type in and do a search for Carmel, California and it is just an absolutely BREATH TAKING little village. I hope we one day pass through Carmel ourselves on our way to the Red Wood Forest in Northern California.
My Pinterest World of Storybook Cottages and Everything Storybook
When Kim first introduced me to Pinterest, I didn’t think I was interested. I wanted some of the delicious looking recipes that I was seeing scroll by, that friends had posted – but I didn’t think I had the time OR the interest to get involved in pinterest.
But I’ve made my own little pinterest world and while many wouldn’t be interested in it at all, it’s a place where I can go for a bit and just go “aaaaaaaaahhh”
I have the fantasy world cottages of Carmel, California in my pinterest files. And I have a lot of other feel good ‘fantasy’ stuff in my pinterest. I have business, blog and love, home and health things in my pinterest world, but the things I like best in MY pinterest world are the things that are more than just ideas of things to do. My pinterest world, below the business boards at the top, is a place where “I” can go to feel all warm and fuzzy. Where I can dream and let the real me that’s deep down inside … come through.
In my pinterest world, you’ll find storybook cottages, storybook woods, storybook woodland paths.
Many people make fun of me for living in a dream world. But HEY – life is what we make of it – always has been and it always will be!
I hope you’ll take a few minutes to peek into my world of storybook dreams below on Pinterest.
