Those ‘in the know’ say that disease begins in the gut. SO if that’s so – and I believe it is – then it just stands to reason that a good probiotic can be a big step forward in making and keeping us healthy. If you’ll just stop and think about some of our major diseases – you’ll realize that a lot of them are not the disease itself – but the ‘symptom’ of an underlying problem. For instance – Diabetes – is a result or symptom of the liver and pancreas not functioning properly. SO do we treat the diabetes ‘symptom’ or do we heal the liver and pancreas? Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure THAT one out!
Probiotics
Just the word Probiotic means to ‘give life’. Pro means “For” and biotic means “life”.
Our overall health is crucial to the healthy functioning of our digestive systems. Good digestion is dependent on the right amount of probiotics and enzymes in our tummies. Probiotics are the good bacteria that give new life to our systems. And we can add them to our own bodies with supplements or specific foods like just eating a little yogurt each day.
When we take strong antibiotics they will often kill the good bacteria in our tummies along with the bad bacteria that has caused us to be sick. So often times, doctors will recommend a probiotic supplement to add some good bacteria back. Adding probiotics on a regular basis can help to keep the tummy in much better working order. And some doctors are now giving it to patients with Irritable Bowel and many other digestive disorders with great success.
Digestion
Digestion is when the food we eat is broken down into a form of ‘goo’ that our bodies can use. It turns our food into our fuel.
When we swallow our food it starts a long journey all the way through our systems.
First through the esophagus and into the tummy and then into the small intestines where the most important part of digestion takes place.
As our food, which has now turned to ‘goo’ keeps on going through that long 25 foot tunnel all the nutrients from our food, the vitamins and minerals and proteins and carbs and fats are absorbed and sent zooming into our bloodstream and to all our starving cells. SOME of our food does not digest and that goo turns to a liquid and goes into the large intestine where it turns into a paste and it leaves the body … guess how?
If you decide to add yogurt to your daily diet, be sure the label says that it contains ‘live cultures’. We’ve tried some of the yogurt drinks and while we love yogurt we just can’t handle those bottled yogurt drinks. YUCKY!!! At least in ‘our’ opinion.
Raw sauerkraut or pickled beets and other fermented veggies are also good sources of live bacteria.
Health Benefits of Probiotics
Probiotics are SO important! They boost the immune system, help detoxify the intestinal tract, reduce cancer risk, reduce risk of and even help inflammatory bowel diseases. Delores, the naturopathic doctor that I worked for at the Golden Carrot, told me several times of a major cancer hospital that would wake their patients at 2am and give them Enzymatic Therapy’s Primal Defense, a very strong probiotic. Because they considered that a crucial part of battling cancer. And yes – anyone can take Enzymatic Therapy’s Primal Defense.
A good probiotic will just help with good digestion in general and is so crucial to good health.
The BEST Probiotic
When I was at the Golden Carrot we were always having people come in and ask what the best probiotic was. I noticed that sometimes Delores would say this one and sometimes that one. So I assumed she didn’t know.
One morning, I took a little container of cooked oatmeal with nothing else in it and I put it out on some wax paper in the kitchen of the store. I opened one capsule each of our 3 best selling Probiotics and sprinkled each one on a little oatmeal and we watched and waited.
The Enzymatic Therapy Probiotic made the oatmeal dissolve (digest) much faster than the other two – in about 20 minutes.
I KNOW Enzymatic Therapy is GREAT and they have a new one called “Pearl” or something like that, that is said to be top of the line.
