What is your favorite thing about October?
For some reason October has always been just about my favorite month in the year. I’ve always had this goofy thing about collecting leaves and unique things out of the woods in the fall. And I can even remember having daddy and mom take us all to Fort Massac so I could gather treasures in the park in the fall.
I STILL go to the woods to gather treasures and I absolutely LOVE the month of October.
When Puppy Love Turns Into The Real Thing –
Geezer and I actually officially met for the first time on October 16th, 1964 and our first date was October 17th. We started going steady on October 27th and that’s something teens of today probably don’t even do anymore. But it was big in the baby boomer days.
We were actually already going steady before he even tried to kiss me for the first time … lol
You talk about a gentleman that was walking the walk. Well – that’s the way he was with me anyway and he’s still that way to this day. He still pampers me in little ways all the time and he still opens doors for me if he can get to the door before “I” do … lol
October is Back To Nature Month For ME
But I love October for so many reasons and in so many ways. I don’t go to Hobby Lobby to decorate our porch – I go to the woods. And I love going to Travis Farm and getting our corn stalks and pumpkins and setting up natural fall decor here and there outside.
I was trying to dry some hydrangeas at the end of summer – to use in my fall decor – but things were so hectic I did it wrong SO I just spray painted them in shades of fall greens … lol
It’s the time I look back on the memories of all the Halloweens past and all the trick or treating we did with the kids and all the fun homemade costumes we came up with year after year. To this day I absolutely LOVE Halloween and we’re so far out in the country – we don’t even have trick or treaters. But it’s just the joy of remembering days gone by and the anticipation of knowing what other families with small kids are experiencing at this time.
October Bring On MORE – Warm and Cozy In The Canyon
I love making the pumpkin bread and other nut breads this time of year and October is the time we really start with the homemade stews and soups and OH my GOODNESS – chili a hundred ways. It’s time to start baking more bread and to deep clean again and pray that my decades old curtains don’t come apart in the washer. It’s the time to get the inside ready for a long winter of hibernation – for just me and this old Geezer that I still adore beyond explanation. It’s the time to start stacking the firewood on the porch and getting the fireplace corner in the house, stocked and ready. It’s the time to take all my big baskets to the woods – one at a time – and fill them to the brim. Because even though Geezer cuts my kindling out of his remnants of wood that he’s had left over from spring and summer projects – I still love to go plod out into the woods and fill my baskets with stick kindling. There’s just something about a fireplace that crackles as your fire burns. It’s this time of year that we know we’re coming up on a few months of real solitude – except for church and a few runs to the grocery to restock – and after keeping up with the cottage garden, the herb garden, the veggie garden and the 2 acre Secret Garden – we’re oh so ready for a couple months of rest, relaxation and just savoring moments.
Together IS our favorite place – to be!
October is just a month that brings on extra warm and cozy for me. And WHAT could be BETTER than THAT?
But now, how about YOU? What do YOU love about October? It’s the question of the day.
