This is My Daily Journal and today is Friday, March 2, 2018 and I’ve already lost total control of my day. SO what I’m going to do today is share one of my favorite readings with you – and it’s just called – – “Dirt Roads.”
dirt roads
By Paul Harvey
What’s mainly wrong with society today is that too many Dirt Roads have been paved.
There’s not a problem in America today, crime, drugs, education, divorce, delinquency that wouldn’t be remedied, if we just had more Dirt Roads, because Dirt Roads give character.
People that live at the end of Dirt Roads learn early on that life is a bumpy ride.
That it can jar you right down to your teeth sometimes, but it’s worth it, if at the end is home…a loving spouse, happy kids and a dog.
We wouldn’t have near the trouble with our educational system if our kids got their exercise walking a Dirt Road with other kids, from whom they learn how to get along.
There was less crime in our streets before they were paved.
Criminals didn’t walk two dusty miles to rob or rape, if they knew they’d be welcomed by 5 barking dogs and a double barrel shotgun.
And there were no drive by shootings.
Our values were better when our roads were worse!
People did not worship their cars more than their kids, and motorists were more courteous, they didn’t tailgate by riding the bumper or the guy in front would choke you with dust & bust your windshield with rocks.
Dirt Roads taught patience.
Dirt Roads were environmentally friendly, you didn’t hop in your car for a quart of milk you walked to the barn for your milk.
For your mail, you walked to the mail box.
What if it rained and the Dirt Road got washed out? That was the best part, then you stayed home and had some family time, roasted marshmallows and popped popcorn and pony rode on Daddy’s shoulders and learned how to make prettier quilts than anybody.
At the end of Dirt Roads, you soon learned that bad words tasted like soap.
Most paved roads lead to trouble, Dirt Roads more likely lead to a fishing creek or a swimming hole.
At the end of a Dirt Road, the only time we even locked our car was in August, because if we didn’t some neighbor would fill it with too much zucchini.
At the end of a Dirt Road, there was always extra springtime income, from when city dudes would get stuck, you’d have to hitch up a team and pull them out.
Usually you got a dollar…always you got a new friend…at the end of a Dirt Road!
Now if that doesn’t start your day off on a warm and fuzzy note – I just don’t even know what to tell ya. 🙂
Peace and just lots of love – coming to you – from Round Knob Canyon

Found this by accident. I was looking for a good hot chocolate recipe that led me here. I almost didn’t read it but I’m glad I did. I was ‘having a day!’ This was a nice read.

Hi Deb and thanks so much for stopping by. Our favorite homemade hot chocolate is just hershey’s cocoa – sugar – vanilla and milk… I start with a little milk in the cocoa and sugar to make that all melt together and become one family 🙂 then I add the vanilla and more milk … I adjust the amount of each depending on how much I’m making…but for 2 of us ..it would be about 1 tbsp cocoa – 1/4 c sugar – 1 tsp vanilla and 2 cups of milk – but about 1/4 of that 2 cups – I use canned milk and I like the Walmart Great Value brand best of all – it has such a mellow but yet rich flavor .. Great Value – 62 cents for the tiny cans and you can always find 3-4 of them in our cabinets 🙂 And in winter I like to keep (on and off) just a little jar of left over expresso in the frig – you just won’t believe what just 1 tbsp of that will do to a cup of hot chocolate .. and I usually have some dark chocolate kisses in the frig and I sometimes add 1-2 of those … ok now this has turned into an evening of making hot chocolate … lol but it’s SO delicious and once you do it .. you can have this cone in 5 minutes…..
SO glad you dropped in and I hope you come back soon … Kay

Nice perspective… and cotybraised kids with concrete sidewalks are great people too, caring friendly family oriented, walkers, runners, good baseball, soccer, football and focused students…. good citizens too, artists, scientists, engineers, nurses, Doctors, Dentists…chefs, bakers, teachers educators, and professors . Urban city or suburban neighborhoods, they too have a community of kind charitable and helpful folks. The wealthy donate large amounts of money to charity, The not so wealthy donate hours of their time to 1000s of good causes and charities…
it’s a matter of childhoods and experiences and being held and loved, while being taught by example , respect others, be kind, and be accountable for what you do. Achieve your best in all you do, Do not lie, cheat or steal- Think before you make judgements, keep your words clean, and hands and feet to yourself.
Take long walks and exercise your mind everyday, read and contemplate. Learn and expand your thinking.
Stay focused on goals for your future, achieve a few per day per week per year… and accept yourself as you become your best, confidence will always rise shine through.
Dirt roads or concrete sidewalks, living your life and raising good children into great adults, it starts in babyhood and grows in childhoods, it’s nature and nurtured learning in taking personal responsibility in developing, effort, and Achieving goals.
A vital key as a child learns, is to learn how to set a goal, and find the motivation to make it, learn it, achieve it, Do it, win it…
A house at the end of a dirt road or a condo on a concrete highway , both environments can produce a great human being. The best outcome is achieved when you’re best Health is balanced by doing the best healthy things, and your best mind is achieved by learning and thinking and creating, and your best body is achieved with the best physical movements for you.
Discover what that is just for you, and what that means to you., and then do that!

I just love anything warm and fuzzy from my childhood – we’d be hard pressed to find – the kind of work ethic and kindness in most of this old world to day – that was so common when I grew up …. I agree whole heartedly with the thought process behind “Dirt Roads” – 🙂 Thanks for stopping by
