It’s day #18 of the May Bloggy Challenge and today we are to tell a story from our childhood. This should be easy!
A story from my childhood? Oh my goodness – there are a gazillion of them. I could easily write a book about growing up in the 1940’s and 50’s. It would be a warm and fuzzy book regardless of how many remember their childhood in another way of that era because I tend to accentuate the positive – that’s just me. But the first story that came to mind was when I was probably about 5 years old and there was a little family grocery just across the next door neighbor’s yard from our house at 1004 East 3rd Street. I was allowed to walk to that little grocery by myself because it was just almost in our yard and mom and daddy knew that family well.
Back in those days – families didn’t keep Coca Cola’s and pop cycles and junk foods at home – so one day mom said I could walk over to the grocery and get me a Coca Cola and bring my sister Sue a popcycle. Now keep in mind this was about 1949 and it was as safe for us kids to walk to the corner grocery back in those days in Metropolis, Illinois … as it is to let kids sit on the front row of church as a group – instead of with their parents. We just didn’t know about crime of virtually any sort in the 40’s and 50’s in Metropolis. It really was like the lives Andy and Opie lived in Mayberry.
Mom had called ahead on our old phone where you pick it up and talk to the operator and tell her who you want to talk to … and I went over there and told them what I wanted and they gave it to me and I think each cost 5 cents. But I ate the pop cycle right there and drank the Coca Cola. Mr Frank said “Your mom called and I think you were supposed to take that popcycle to your little sister” I was so shy I was crushed that I had been found out. SO Mr Frank called mom and told her what had happened. He said he’d just send another popcycle for my little sister and they could pay for it the next time they came in.
THANK THE GOOD LORD I out GREW my thieving ways and grew into a pretty good old and dependable old church lady.
I could go on and on with these stories … but Kim and I have a class today and I’ve gotta get my dailies done and get ready. We have several classes this week and still have more strawberries to get and to put up … plus all the regular work – it’s going to be a very busy week.
Tomorrow is day #19 of the May Bloggy Challenge and the subject is to be “Name your 5 favorite blogs and what you like about them” … I hope you can check back.
