I’m going to expand on Dr. Steven Masley’s 5 Heart Healthy Foods that were listed in In A 30 Day Heart Tune Up – Kickstart Your Heart Health.
5 Heart Healthy Foods
According to Dr Masley, there are 5 heart nourishing foods and they are:
-
- Fiber as in beans, veggies, fruits and nuts. Fiber normalizes bowel movements and helps maintain bowel health. It also lowers cholesterol levels and helps control blood sugar levels.
- Fish Oil and that can be found in mussels, canned wild salmon, and supplements. But he says it’s important to take a good quality fish oil supplement because a bad or ‘old one’ can do more harm than good. And I’ll be researching to find the best fish oil supplement today. I saw a study the other day that said to determine if your fish oil is of good quality, take one fish oil caplet and put it in the freezer overnight. If it still has mostly a clear look inside the caplet by morning, you probably have a good fish oil. IF the fish oil caplet is smoky looking and you can no longer see through it – toss those fish oil caplets out. Ours were still clear in the morning and we take the Nature’s Bounty Mini Caplets from amazon.
- Magnesium can be found in greens, cheese, nuts and is so good for the heart, blood pressure and sugar. Many people who have migraines are just deficient in Magnesium. But the thing about magnesium is that you shouldn’t take it without calcium and you need magnesium citrate and not magnesium oxide.
- Vitamin D not only helps prevent cancer but is needed for a healthy heart and healthy body functions in general. Dr Masley said that most of us are deficient in Vitamin D and even those who live in places known for lots of sunshine are still deficient. He said that 95% of the population is deficient in Vit D and it’s one of those vitamins that just really needs supplemented. He said most of us need 2000 IU of Vit D. Foods high in Vitamin D are milk and other dairy, eggs, mushrooms, mackerel, salmon, sardines. Now some people worry about getting too much mercury when eating canned fish. But Dr Masley says that Tuna is the highest in mercury and we shouldn’t eat tuna more than once or twice a week but the others are minimal in mercury.
- Vitamin K is known as the clotting vitamin and is so crucial. Dr Masley said that Vitamin K prevents the calcium from going from our bones to our arteries and clogging them up. Vitamin K can be found in brussel sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, cayenne, asparagus, okra and in leafy greens. Geezer was laughing last night during the news because McDonald’s has added Kale to their menu. But kale is one of the healthiest foods in the world … right along with cauliflower.
Now not many of us are sitting around thinking, “GADS!!! I wish I had a big old bowl of kale or cauliflower” But when you think of it in terms of healthy nutrients, we should be. I’m not a fan of kale! It’s bitter and just yuck to ME! But we love raw spinach and that also has Vitamin K. The highest greens in Vitamin K I think would be Endive at about 344% – And to show you a comparison – Romain, which most of us eat … only has about 60%.
