Goodness gracious sakes alive, there seems to be an epidemic of heart attacks, strokes and even aneurysm’s lately. WHAT is the DEAL? And they’re also happening in very young people TOO.
Now I’m not a rocket scientist … but I really DID stay at a Holiday Inn once, so let’s see if we can’t figure out what’s going ON and see if we can prevent these things in ourselves … how bout it?
See the old doctor in the cartoon? You know what he’s doing? He’s had a patient come in to see him and you can tell the old geezer doesn’t feel well by the way he’s looking, so he’s come in for his old faithful family doctor to tell him what’s wrong and how they’re going to fix him back up in record time. And just look at the old family doctor … he’s flipping a coin to decide which diagnosis he’s going to GIVE the old geezer because HE doesn’t have a CLUE! We have to get to know our own bodies. AND THEN … we need to be knowledgeable in ways to get and stay healthy. Oh goodness, shall we pray…
Let’s take them one at a time and I’ll try not to talk TOO much … I know how I can get carried away. But let’s tell simply what each one IS and what we may be able to do to prevent them.
Heart Attack
Also known as a Myocardial Infarction in the medical field.
And that’s when blood stops flowing freely to a certain part of the heart and causes damage to the heart muscle because it isn’t getting enough oxygen. And it stops flowing freely because one of the arteries leading to the heart becomes blocked by a buildup of cholesterol and fat.
That’s why many of us take an aspirin a day … to hopefully keep our blood thinned down so it can continue flowing freely if our arteries are becoming too narrow from buildup.
But that dangerous buildup happens because of a bad diet and/or sedentary lifestyle.
Stroke
Also known as a Cerebrovascular Accident.
But let me tell ya, a stroke is no accident. We bring those on ourselves just like we do the heart attacks. By bad diet and too sedentary a lifestyle.
And a stroke occurs when the blood and oxygen to the brain are blocked off and that causes the death of brain cells.
Depending on which side of the brain the artery is blocked … is what determines how bad it will be or what other parts of the body are going to be effected.
Some people are just totally disabled from a stroke and can’t walk or even speak to where you can understand them. While others seem to totally re-coop and get back to a pretty much normal lifestyle after a little re-cooperation and therapy.
Brain Aneurysm
Now an aneurysm is horse of a different color!
An aneurysm is when wall of an artery weakens in one area and starts to bulge. These things usually happen without us even knowing it. Which makes them very dangerous. Because if they bulge to the point of bursting…OH my GOODNESS…Shall we pray!
The tendency towards brain aneurysms can be inherited. OR they can be caused by hardening of the arteries and just plain old aging.
Blood pressure is a huge factor in a person being susceptible to an aneurysm because when we don’t take our meds for BP like we should…and our blood pressure goes up and down…that weakens the walls of the arteries and … well, that’s just not good.
SO now we know these 3 things seem to be on the rise and we’re feeling a little panicked.
But HEY … YOU ARE your own body’s KEEPER!
Your health is determined by your diet and lifestyle and that’s just a fact!
Bad as we hate to hear it … because we all love fried chicken and whipped potatoes and so many things that are really delicious but not good FOR us.
N.W. Walker said it best in one of his many books … and I can’t remember exactly how HE put it…but he said that our bodies are just like the homes we live in and the cars we drive. And we have to keep our homes in good condition or they’re going to fall apart.
The plumbing’s going to get stopped up or the roof is going to spring a leak or with the passing of years and the changing of temps, the windows are not going to fit just like they should and we’ll have a problems with heat in the house in the winter….
Our bodies are the same way! Absolutely everything about keeping our body functioning properly is absolutely determined by how we take care of it.
He said that just like our family car. It may look pretty good on the outside, but we get in it to go to the grocery store … proud as punch that we’re able to drive such a fine looking vehicle and the next thing we know, we come out of the store and the battery’s dead and it isn’t ABOUT to move … or it’s needing a new transmission … or the starter has gone bad or we have a flat tire on the way home because we didn’t keep a close eye on those tires as they aged and one of them blew a hole and you’re thinking ‘Well I had no IDEA anything was going awry with my fine looking car … until I got in it to go and it would have none of THAT.”
That’s what happens to so many people. They go to bed at night thinking all is well with the world. Yes they had steak and potatoes for supper and 2 bowls of ice cream … but we know that isn’t good for us and SURE ENOUGH … we’ll get on a good diet and life style program starting TOMORROW!
But tomorrow comes and when we DO wake up … IF we do … we’re in ICU and our spouse has had to call the ambulance instead of fixing our breakfast because we didn’t get up when we usually do and upon checking in on us they found us … not snoozing … but unconscious … from a stroke or heart attack or maybe even ….eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeegads … an aneurysm!
The key is eat healthy and MOVE DAILY!!!
START your meal with healthy food like a big salad. No it may not be as good as the chicken and potatoes you hope to have for the main course. But if you’ll start with salad … and then try to make your main course fairly healthy … lean chicken, turkey, salmon … raw or steamed veggies … cut off the sugar and especially artificial sweetener … cut out the white flour and back WAY off on dairy. And then find time to walk for 30 minutes a day even if the only time and place you can do that is in front of the television during the evening news.
Just so much bad news lately.
If you smoke … STOP IT!!!
If you drink … STOP IT!!!
If you eat lots of fried and unhealthy foods … STOP IT!!!
We’re all going to do these things tomorrow … but for so many of our friends and family … tomorrow didn’t come.
STOP putting off until tomorrow … the diet and lifestyle change you need to make TODAY!!!
The health condition you will be turning around … WILL BE … your own!
